Teacher Week: Now Teach! Organizing for Instruction

Today we are taking a look at organizing for instruction, so that you can "now teach!"  We hope you find some useful tips in this post and from our fellow bloggers who have linked up.   Don't forget to check back with us each day of Teacher Week.

New crates to help me stay organized. I always get behind on filing and so I created a bin where I can "hide" everything that needs to be filed.

These bins hold everything for my parent volunteers. Sometimes I'm with reading groups when my parent volunteers come in, so I created these bins.  The parents can come in and just grab whatever is in the bin and begin working (I always leave a note inside and make sure to say hello to them). You can read more about it *here*.

{These} crate seats are PERFECT to store white boards, markers, or anything you need for guided reading.  And... it's just right under their bums, so you won't waste any time!

Hi, Erica Bohrer here from Erica's Ed-Ventures (formerly know as  Erica Bohrer's First Grade) to share some organizational tips to help you optimize your teaching time!
 These labels come in my Back to School Organizational Forms and More Packet.  You can also simply write the numbers inside the books.
These mailboxes are made out of two spray painted white shoe organizers from Target.  I push them together to save space.  I hot glue the number labels to the mailboxes and "try" and use them year to year .  A few numbers got peeled off last year... kids love to peel things!  This year, I am going to print the calendar labels from my birthday board pack at a reduced size and use them for the labels.  I also have a just number and letter labels decor pack  here.
 I use these helping hand labels year after year.  The students don't touch the circles and they are laminated, so they stay in good condition.  If you are interested, these are available in my Classroom Jobs packet.

 I label everything!   I like to label and I like to organize things.  My home does not look like this, well... except for my shoe collection!   I love that I can ask a student to get me a clothespin and he/she knows which bin to bring me.  You know that moment when you don't have one hand free and your clothespin just broke as you are already on top of a desk?  You have totally been there right?  So instead have having to get down and grab one, the students help me out because they know where they are.  The students love to help, this might be a first grade thing, and they love the independence the room fosters.  If they need a supply, they know where to grab it.
Most students need to MOVE.   They cannot stay sitting at a desk.  I like to incorporate learning and movement.   Hence, the Read/Write the Room Center.   When your room is already print rich and everything is labeled, it is easy for the students to find words and it is an easy center for you to set up. Plus, the students are never done!  If a student tells me he/she is done, I tell him/her that there are probably 800 words in this room, did you get all them?  OF COURSE NOT - go back and keep writing.   Here is a FREE Read/Write the Room Center:

 Keep like things in the same area.  Don't go running all over your room looking for something and waste valuable prep time or valuable teaching time.  Keep all math stuff in a math area, all reading materials by the reading area, science stuff in a science bin or closet...you get the point.  It is so much easier to search one area.   Above is an example of my math closet.  The white boxes above store math centers and their recording sheets.  I just pull out a box and put the contents into a center basket when I want to use it.  I also keep an original sheet to duplicate at the bottom of the box.  Before I put the center back away, I make sure I make more copies.  The white boxes are called "Printer's Boxes" and our district uses them to send us our duplicating.  I always recycle mine and use them for storage.  I hide them in the closet because they don't look as neat as plastic bins.
These large plastic bins were purchased at Wal-mart and I have one for every month we are in school.  Inside, I store things that I only use specifically in that month: read alouds, centers, project samples, etc.  I use large zip storage bags to store as much as I can.  I like clear bags as opposed to manila envelopes because I can easily see is inside and they just fit letter sized paper.

I hope these tips help you optimize your teaching time!

It's your turn to show us your stuff! Post some organizational ideas and link up below! Don't forget to snag this button:

Teacher Week: Classroom Digs

Hey y'all!  I'm Amy Lemons from Step into 2nd Grade :)  I'm here to show you my Classroom Digs for Teacher Week!  Now, before we begin, I have to tell you that my classroom is totally a 'work in progress!' But if anyone gets that it is you because YOU are a teacher!  My campus has been closed ALL summer, so when Monday rolled around last week I was very eager to get in and start working!

Here is my English Alphabet(my students will create the pictures/words to go with each letter), English Word Wall, and Writing Bulletin Board!  You can find the pencil poster {HERE} and the Writing BB set {HERE}!  I used fabric from Hobby Lobby on all of my boards :)  And, I can easily staple to any wall in my room, PTL!
 Now on to the front of my classroom!  I have my Spanish Alphabet, AR tracking board, objectives for the day and my calendar will go on that blank BB once I figure out how I want that space to look!  You can find the number words {HERE}.  I found those pillows at Target!
Closer look at my AR tracking board... still need to add some accents and student clips so they can move along the ribbons as they earn AR points!
 Here is my Spanish Word Wall and computer table
 I have an obsession with buying children's books, do you?!  I have actually cut back quite a bit this year so that my students can choose more easily, and I want to showcase some books/author studies throughout the year!  I used Hope's Subway Decor that you can find {HERE} and {HERE}
 Closer look at my book bin labels that I got from Reagan Tunstall!
 Next up... student lockers!  Above the lockers you will see our school responsibilities.  I sent the images to Wal-Mart so that I could make them poster-size!  The clock numbers you can grab up {HERE}.  My locker numbers are from {HERE}.  The birthday cupcakes are from {HERE}!  The star paper is actually wrapping paper!!  The paper and lanterns are from Hobby Lobby!
 I am so glad that those cabinets have doors because the inside is just a mess, y'all.  You would probably be like.... this girl has a blog?  She can' even organize cabinets!  BUT, those doors hide all of my clutter :)  I was inspired by Cara Carroll last year to make my cabinet decor!  After I got rid of my ladybug theme I needed something cheap and quick to put above my cabinets SO those bags were the perfect solution (found at Hobby Lobby)!  You'll also see my Daily Five charts that I have ready to go!  I used velcro dots to stick 'em up so that I can easily take them down to fill out with my kiddos!
 Closer look at my bags!
 View of my room from the sink (I'll have anywhere from 20-22 students I think!)
Table caddies are my life saver!  Seriously, I don't deal with student boxes and keeping up with individual supplies!  We share everything!!  The Table Numbers come from my Chevron Unit!
My table caddies aren't quite full yet, but you get the picture of how I store their supplies.  The baskets and caddies are from Really Good Stuff!
 View of my room from the door...
 View of my room from the computer table...
 View of my room from my teaching table...
 I got rid of my teacher desk a few years ago and I haven't looked back!  There's so much less clutter and so much more available space!  The reading posters came from A Cupcake for the Teacher that you can find {HERE}!  I will post pictures of my family on my Mrs. Lemons board and my laptop will go on that student desk if I don't need it for a kiddo!
 Here's how I organize my teaching supplies and materials (All of my labels come from HERE).  My binder holders can be found HERE and the plastic bins are from the Dollar Tree!
 And, here's my wall of "unfinished work"  I need the classroom fairy to visit my room and make it all go away :)
WOAH!  That was a lot of information, but I don't want to leave out any little part!  I am hoping to have everything finished in the next week or so if life goes as planned ;)

Now, check out the cuteness below from THE Mrs. Deedee Wills' herself!
*********************************************************************************
Hiddy Ho!  This is Deedee!
and here is my classroom!

The first thing I wanted to accomplish was to recover my chair.  I love how it turned out!  You simply call your mom wrap the chair with the fabric, then staple it (with a staple gun) into place.  We she then whip stitched the back piece.
 Then my mom made these curtains to cover my cubbies.  In all honesty, my "before" pictures don't usually look that messy, but I love having them hidden behind the magic curtain.
This is my writing station and the area where I display my letters and words of the week.   We {mom} also made cushions for the tops of my Rubbermaid bins.  I store my monthly classroom resources in them, but we discovered they make PERFECT little seats for my fine motor station.
 This is the banner from Abby Mullins ADORABLE Crazy for Kinders Unit. I used it last year, but saved it.  I decided to hang it up, but I will replace the letters as my students bring their's in after Open House tomorrow night.  I didn't want that space to look naked!

 The saying above it says, "Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart."  That Winnie-the-Pooh has a way with words.
 On one wall I have my numbers... the other wall is displays my word wall.
The lime and purple number cards are from Erica Bohrer.  You can find them {here}.
She also made the word wall headers.  You can find them {here}.
I love the color posters from Cheryl Saoud.  You can find them {here}
UPDATE:
Here is a video tour!  Now, I shot this video after about a 12 hour work day... You have been warned~I'm a rambler.  In fact, you may be happy to just put it on mute!

In my video, I talk about adding links on how to make the palm tree and how to make the pillows.  I added those links on my blog {here}.

Tomorrow two of the Blog Hoppers will be back for NOW TEACH!  We are going to talk all about organizing for instruction!

Teacher Week '13: Let's Talk About Me Monday

Today Hope and Kacey are teaming up to host today's topic... "Meet the Teacher"! Here are 10 fun, must know facts about us!

{10 things about Kacey..}

1. I teach first grade in a teeny, tiny, little, bitty, small town in Mississippi. I am the only first grade teacher at my school and I have 11 students this year.

2. I teach at the same school where I went to school from 1st-12th grade.

3. This is my 14th year to teach. I have taught first grade 11 years and was an elementary librarian for 3 years.

4. Other than teaching, I also own a stationery business called Doodle Bugs Paper that is my heart and soul. It is my "baby". I have been designing and selling my stationery for 10 1/2 years. Some of the people who I consider closest to my heart are customers!

5. I have been married for 12 years and we have two cats that we consider children.. Spunky and Peanut. Yes, we are those people!

6. I am loyal to certain TV shows and never miss an episode of General Hospital, the Voice, Dancing with the Stars, Big Brother, or Nashville. But, seriously could not tell you the last time I have been in a movie theater or sat down to watch a movie at home. It has been YEARS!

7. I am a morning person and get up really early.  I can accomplish more before 8 am than some people do all day. I am my most productive early, early in the mornings! But, I am soooo guilty of an afternoon nap. It's the only way I can survive. Otherwise, I am in the bed, asleep by 9 pm.

8. A few of my least favorite things are: snakes, lizards, frogs, mice, seafood, hot weather, tomatoes, talking on the phone, coffee, housework, long car rides, mosquitoes, mystery, historical or science fiction books.

9. I absolutely love: a beach vacation, a good hamburger, peanut butter, chocolate, birthday cake and ice cream, a fresh set of sheets, snow days, anything multicolored, cold pizza, anything personalized and I have a strong love for animals.

10. And a few random things: I curl my eyelashes everyday, my ears are not pierced, I wish I could play the piano, I have never used the china we received as wedding gifts, I don't own an ironing board, I believe in writing thank you notes, and I am always on time. That's all!

{10 things about Hope...}

Hey y’all! So excited that it is FINALLY Teacher Week 2013.  I am also excited to be co-hosting today’s post with Sweet Kacey from Doodle Bugs. Since today is “Meet the Teacher” Monday, I have tried {unsuccessfully...I think ;) } to come up with 10 facts that you may or may not know about me. So…here we go!

1)  I am married to the love of my life. His name is Wade, and he is the most patient husband in the entire world. He is also a teacher. We taught at the same school for two years and had way too much fun.

2)   That same sweet husband moved me to Atlanta about a month ago. He will be teaching at the Ron Clark Academy this year and we couldn’t be more excited about this opportunity! I hate, hate, HATE the traffic here, but I must admit, I definitely love the city. It has it’s own special charm and is tons of fun.

{The RCA Kickball Team}

3)   We recently "adopted" our first baby. While she is not an actual baby, I swear she requires the same amount of attention and care as a human. Her name is Maya. We call her our “Sour Patch Kid” because sometimes she is sour {chewing on the furniture and MY shoes}, but most of the time she is sweet. And I mean come one, how cute is that face?!?

4)   I love to run. Really, I love it. I have been a runner since I was five years old when I won my very first race. I was a sucker for medals and trophies as a kid, so that kept me interested. When my parents would ask me if I wanted to run in a race, I would ask about the size of the trophy. If it satisfied, I would run…and I would win. I was willing to do anything in the name of a big trophy! I am still that way. Competitive much? If you don’t believe me, check out these bruises that I am still sporting { a week later} from a kickball tournament last weekend.

Did I mention that I am running the Disney Marathon in January?

5)   I have amazing taste in television….just ask my husband {totally kidding…but what does he know anyways}! ;) I am a reality TV and soap opera junky. I *might* even DVR every single episode of Days of Our Lives and The Bold and the Beautiful.  I also love The Bachelorette {event though it drove me insane this season} and anything on Lifetime.

6)   My husband and I love to travel. You may already know that we were married in Venice, Italy. One of the best decisions I ever made. This made me fall in love with Europe. I am trying to convince my husband that we need to move there, but right now he is perfectly content in Atlanta.

7)   I love blogging {duh…right?!?} and I’ll tell you why! I have made some of the most amazing friends through this little blogging adventure. I love telling others about these sweet friends, and I also love the weird looks that I get when I tell them that I met them on the internet! ;) Seriously, these girls are just as amazing in person as they are on their adorable blogs.

8)   I am a craft-a-holic. It is bad, y’all. Mix that with a perfectionist and impatience and you will totally understand why I worked fourteen hours straight on Saturday to refinish furniture. I can’t sit and wait when I have a craft idea in mind. It has it be done and it MUST be THAT second. What can I say? I get it from my momma! ;) I don’t know whether to hug her or strangle her! ;)

9)   I also love to shop…what teacher doesn’t right?!? As you know from my sweet friend, Amy Lemons, I am obsessed with The Mint Julep. I don’t tell many people my secret about where I get my clothes, so feel special! ;)

10) My favorite color is green. Shocked?!? If you follow me on instagram, you shouldn't be surprised. I almost think I take my green obsession a little too far sometimes. I just can’t help it! What’s not to love about this color?

Just in case you don't believe me, here is a piece of furniture that I just refinished for my office! Guess what color...

Well that's it for Meet the Teacher Monday. We can't wait to learn all about you! Make sure that you link up below and we will see you back tomorrow for Classroom Digs!
