Hi Blog Hoppers! It's Hope King from Second Grade Shenanigans here to share a few of my favorite Halloween{ish} activities!

Fall Feature from What the Teacher Wants!

Hello Blog Hoppers!!

We are Rachelle and Natalie from What the Teacher Wants and we wanted to share some of our very favorite fall ideas with you as part of Blog Hoppin's Fall Feature!

Here is Natalie's Halloween Writing Pack that is geared especially for students in the upper elementary grades. Nothing gets students excited about writing quite like writing about candy, costumes, and scary things.

Here is Rachelle's  Halloween pack which is perfect for the younger grades. This pack is full of ideas you can use to integrate math, literacy, and art - and  it goes great with the Common Core!

Want a little Halloween freebie? Here's a free printable you can download to help you survive the day after Halloween!

This will be a great activity for your students who will be dying to talk about what they did on Halloween!

Let's Celebrate Fall!

Hi everyone, it's Amy from The Resource(ful) Room!

I am so excited to share some fall fun with all of you! I love Fall! It's such a beautiful time with all the colors and perfect weather! I you enjoy teaching fall themes too. Apples, leaves, pumpkins, and scarecrows, Halloween and Thanksgiving! We all love fall, so we decided to put together a little treat for all of you! Join us for the next several days as we feature our favorite fall products!

Today I"m sharing my favorite product for celebrating Halloween in the classroom!
My students are always working on fluency. I like to mix it up each month just to keep them interested. This month it's all about costumes, candy, and spooky animals!  They love theses centers! They got so excited when they saw the new Halloween theme out this week!
This unit includes everything you need for five different fluency centers.

1.) Pocket chart reading cards with "unique voice" cards so they can practice using different intonation while they read the cards. Your students can be a ghost, a witch, a cowboy. There are several "voices" for them to choose from. Fun pointers and spy glasses are included to help them track their reading too!

2.) The roll a phrase game is perfect for playing with a partner, or in a small group. It's a fun way to add some movement into your fluency practice! Players read phrases to collect cards. They can lose cards too depending on what number they roll on the dice. The player with the most cards in the end wins!

3.)The reading passages are leveled and numbered for timed reading. There is a chart to graph words read and track improvement over five reads. Five different stories are included.

4.)The poetry center includes five original poems as well as activity sheets for extended practice with rhyming words, synonyms, and word choice.

5.) Five readers theaters designed to be read with a partner help students take on the voice of a character. My students love reading these to the entire class when they have practiced them and can read them well.

Each of these centers can be printed in color or black and white!

If your students need a little practice with fluency, and you celebrate Halloween, this is the perfect unit for your class! You can come on over to my TPT store and check it out!

Be sure to come back tomorrow  through October 25th  to see more great fall products featured by great teacher authors! Happy Fall!!

Word of the Week, Yo!

Good evening, Blogging Buddies!! Kerri B from Teacher Bits and Bobs here...

I am here to share with you a fun little center that you can simply print out and use week after week in your Daily 5 or Literacy stations, whilst helping your children learn new vocabulary and practice using the words in their writing! Here it is...
These Print and Go sentence scramble worksheets are the perfect INDEPENDENT Literacy activities for your Kinders and Firsties to complete on their own. Independently. Can I get an AMEN??

My students complete these every single week, and they love it, because they know exactly what to do, AND they are practicing learning new vocabulary and writing words and a sentence at the same time. GLORIOUS!! We always do this one on Mondays to get their little brains using the vocab word that we will be focusing on, and to allow them to ease back into the  school routine with a center that they feel confident doing, and they LOVE to do!

Here's a closer look...

And here's a list of all of the vocabulary words that are included for the year... 50 in all!!
You can check this out in my TPT shop by clicking any of the pictures above. :)

Here's a FREEBIE Word of the Work printable that you can print out tonight and use in your literacy centers next week!! Click the picture to download via Google docs...

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!!

Around the World with Columbus and a Maps and Globes Unit!

Teaching about Columbus has become a controversial subject in some districts, but in my district, we are still allowed to teach his story and we actually combine him with our Map and Globes unit. We  approach the study of Columbus as an introduction to Explorers. The goal of both of these units is to give our students an understanding of how people use maps to find their way around and that people long ago learned about the world through exploration.

The Columbus unit that we use was written specifically for younger children. It can easily be taught in a day or stretched to a few days; whatever works for you. Children create a mini booklet and then pretend they are an explorer and illustrate a map with things they might see on their journey. Our students love this unit and it is a great beginning for studying Maps and Globes.

There are soooo many things covered in our Maps and Globes unit, so we pick certain skills to work on during this time of year and then revisit the unit later in the year adding more skills as the year progresses. We cover similarities and differences between maps and globes, physical and man made features, bird's eye view, elevation maps, compass rose, and even architectural maps! Kids are also given an opportunity to create their maps and globes and they LOVE it!

Happy weekend!
